Focal Laser Ablation (FLA) Therapy for Prostate Caner
Focal therapy is for selective patients with localised prostate cancer who have a small area of intermediate grade cancer and are either not suitable for or choose not to have more involved Robotic Radical Prostatectomy surgery or radiation.
The treatment involves targeting the tumour with laser ablation to destroy the cancerous cells. The patient is placed under general anaesthesia and laser sheath is positioned within the prostate via the perineum (the area between the rectum and the back of the scrotum) with an ultrasound passed into the rectum. A laser probe, placed into the prostate via the laser sheath, generates heat and destroys cancer cells.
In appropriate situations, focal therapy can offer several advantages for men with early prostate cancer:
-
It can effectively destroy specific areas of cancer within the prostate while preserving normal prostate tissue and function.
-
Requires only a day stay in hospital and quicker recovery
-
Minimal side effects
Dr Elmes follows a rigorous set of standards for recommending people to receive focal therapy. This includes performing a thorough evaluation to confirm that the tumour is small and localized and that a more extensive treatment isn’t required.
