Holmium Laser Enucleation is the new gold standard (1) of treatment for an enlarged and obstructing prostate. Dr Elmes pioneered HoLEP in Qld, performing the first case more than ten years ago. He is the most experienced HoLEP surgeon in QLD. 

 

It is a minimally invasive procedure and follows the exact anatomical planes within a prostate with precision allowing complete resection of all adenoma (obstructing tissue) whilst preserving the outer capsule, erectile nerves and urethral sphincter. Dr Elmes is highly trained and skilled in the HoLEP technique and he continues to mentor and train other Urological Surgeons across Australia to ensure this advanced and highly successful procedure is readily available for men.

Its short and longterm outcomes are superior to those associated with older prostate surgery:

 

• less bleeding

• lower chance of erectile dysfunction or incontinence

• same maximal flow rate and urinary symptom improvement

• minimal reoperation rate

 

and superior to older prostate laser surgery:

 

• Importantly allows sampling of tissue to look for cancer

• same low blood loss

• lower chance of incontinence

• greater improvement in flow rates and urinary symptoms

• lower reoperation rate

 

Dr Elmes recommends HoLEP for all his patients with moderately to severely bothersome symptomatic BPH that have:

 

• failed or do not wish to have medical therapy

• are willing to tolerate retrograde ejaculation

• that do not wish to undergo the older style TURP or re-bore
